GTTS - The Occupational Aspect

The Occupational Aspect Is the 7th installment of the Personal Wellness Series.

Is the Occupational Aspect To Personal Wellness A Scam?

The occupational aspect is just as important as the physical aspect of personal wellness.

The difference is that the occupational aspect can be rolled into several other aspects of personal wellness.

According to GRCC, “Occupational/Vocational wellness involves preparing and making use of your gifts, skills, and talents in order to gain purpose, happiness, and enrichment in your life.”

We will take an in-depth look at the occupational aspect of personal wellness.

What Is The Occupational Aspect Of Personal Wellness?

GTTS - What Is The Occupational Aspect Of Personal Wellness?

The occupational aspect of personal wellness primarily evolves around the sense of satisfaction with our choice of employment.

A Washington State University article states, “Occupational wellness is the ability to achieve a balance between work and leisure in a way that promotes health, a sense of personal satisfaction and is (for most people) financially rewarding.”

Our attitude or approach to our work, work environment, or coworkers.

“It is never too late and you are never too old to become better!” Unknown

When we consider occupational wellness, we seek to identify sources of stress in order to make adjustments in our life to remove them.

Therefore, our attitude and ability to productively cope with work, school, and career goals greatly affect wellness, performance, interactions with others and overall success.

Occupational wellness is intertwined with and has an impact on the other aspects of personal wellness.

This relationship is especially true for the physical, emotional, and financial aspects.

It begs the question, ‘what are you prepared to do’ to achieve occupational wellness?

Myths About The Occupational Aspect Of Personal Wellness

GTTS - Myths About The Occupational Aspect Of Personal Wellness

Myth number one is that the occupational aspect is superficial.

This could not be farther from the truth.

Occupational wellness is actually a part of the wellness foundation.

As such, it is required to help build the best version of ourselves.

The second myth refers to the one-size-fits-all stereotype.

Each of us is different even though we jump through the same hoops.

Our journeys affect each of us differently.

“The higher your energy level, the more efficient your body. The more efficient your body, the better you feel and the more you will use your talent to produce outstanding results.” Tony Robbins

For example, becoming a doctor, lawyer, or dentist is not for everyone; however, being employed as a police officer, firefighter, or a pilot is a turn off for some too.

The paths we take come with their own sets of issues.

Therefore, we often seek out the path of the least resistance.

Myth number three is the health and wellness are the same.

In actuality, health is merely a state of being.

On the other hand, wellness is the state of actively living a healthy lifestyle.

More or less, it is an ongoing process of change and growth that results in a better state of well-being in all aspects of life.

In addition, much of to do with health is beyond our control.

Wellness allows us to choose a better lifestyle.

One final myth is that we can take shortcuts to achieve occupational wellness.

We may be able to manipulate our circumstances, but we cannot exploit our experiences.

Issues Affecting Us In The Workplace

GTTS - Issues Affecting Us In The Workplace

There are numerous social problems that affect our behavior and success.

A few examples are:

  • Poverty
  • Drug and alcohol use
  • Domestic violence
  • Sexism and racism

It is said that poverty does not strike all demographics equally.

Approximately 4 million (25.7 percent of population) people with disabilities live in poverty.

It was reported that in 2018, 16.2% of all children (11.9 million kids) within the USA lived in poverty.

Incidentally, that is almost 1 in every 6 children.

Some people who drink alcohol, use illegal drugs, or misuse prescription or nonprescription medicines may develop a substance use disorder.

Substance use disorders can range from mild to severe.

Indicators of a substance disorder are:

  • Affects employment
  • Driving under the influence
  • Strong craving to consume drug or alcohol
  • Argumentative about the amount of consumption

It is also safe to assume that alcohol and drug use could be an unconscious attempt at self-treatment for another problem, such as depression.

It is believed that people who use alcohol and drugs may be more likely to engage in risky behaviors.

Occupational Aspect Goals

GTTS - Occupational Aspect Goals

For many of us, occupational wellness goals may clearly fall into a “personal” or “professional” category.

“One way to keep momentum going is to have constantly greater goals.” Michael Korda

Alternatively, these goals could easily overlap into both categories combining both work and home.

Developing our soft skills and capability to feel empathy will help improve all areas of our lives.

Building and improving professional relationships are an important part of our personal development goals.

Improving our time management skills help increase our productivity and efficiency, decrease our stress, and allow us to have more time to dedicate to other endeavors.

Designing our own success depends on our definition of what it means.

If one can define success and happiness, then that will help clarify what is necessary to achieve it.

Another goal is to find new challenges to keep things interesting and satisfying.

We can demonstrate our ambition and be especially helpful to others.

A mean to building leadership abilities.

In four words — ‘Do not become passive’.

This occurs when we put other people’s preferences or needs ahead of our own.

Although, sometimes necessary, problem occur when we are consistently passive.

At the onset, we may feel good in the short-term; however, the long-term affect will require larger sacrifices.

We would be able to achieve more than individuals with a fixed mindset.

  1. I cannot agree more. I think your occupation has a direct correlation with your personal wellness. A hard day at work leaving you stressed takes a toll on our mind. On the contrary, even if you had a hard time, loving what you do will certainly have a great effect in your personal wellness. Loved your work and your pacing; the tips are much appreciated. Thanks, and kudos to your work.

For me, the main thing to keep checked is the overall balance between work and play. I have so many different interests that I want to pursue, and the mood seems to suffer when there isn’t enough time for them due to work. There are certainly no shortcuts.

  4. This is important information that you’ve put forth here.  Many people are afraid to leave the security of their paycheck to pursue other opportunities or are unable to afford to do so.  It’s important to remember that one can continue to work while preparing for better employment.  The video you posted has a lot of good information.  For example, volunteering in your spare time can make you feel better about your situation.  Checking community resources can uncover training programs or companies that offer on-the-job training.  You can also check with your employer to see if they offer opportunities for transfers or training.  Many medical employers, for example, will pay for training for those who want to advance their careers.  I agree with your advice completely…if you’re unhappy, find a way to change your circumstances.  “Turn That Frown Upside Down!”
